The cost of pushing drugs

May 18th, 2008 · No Comments

You would think that if a drug is found that can cure something, or help someone’s health would be studied by doctors and then prescribed accordingly. If this was the case would it not promote its self? After all, it’s published in journals and read by our scientific minds? Well when pharmaceuticals spend lots of big money to promote their drugs, it brings to question a few things… like do we really need them? Couple that with the recent recalls and discoveries that some of these drugs caused death or risk of recently.

If you discovered an engine that could eliminate pollution and save our resources, would it cost 10 billion to market it? That’s where you have to question why so much money is spent to promote drugs, and to who do they promote this to? Doctors or directly to the consumer? This article from Better Body Journal provoked quite a bit of controversy recently. I think we have to question the motives and maybe greed which these huge companies drive for. Ask yourself when viewing a commercial, do they care about your health or the profit they can report at the next quarterly report. After seeing a documentary like The Corporation, you can’t help asking yourself what damage the greed can cause… it would be very stupid to think that these companies main motive is to better our lives especially when they spend billions in making sure you take their hit. They will spend $1 billion in 2008 on direct marketing to make a return of $10 billion (3). Now that’s profitable!
